Plant Metabolic Engineering Lab, at the Department of Biotechnology, Bharathiar University focuses on two thrust areas of plant biotechnology, namely, manipulating plant gene expression for enhanced nutritional components and for abiotic stress tolerance in important crop species like Tomato, Soybean, Groundnut and Radish. Plant tissue culture and Agrobacterium mediated gene transformation techniques are employed to attain this goal. Also, metabolite profiling of various medicinally and commercially significant plants like Tulsi, Plumbago and Senna are routinely carried out in the lab.

An estimated 100,000 unique compounds are produced in the plant kingdom. As a global food crisis is looming over us, elucidating the metabolic networks of plants is of utmost importance. Metabolic engineering, the redirection of one or more enzymatic reactions in a pathway to produce new compounds or to enhance the production of an existing compound, can be made feasible only with comprehensive knowledge of these metabolic networks. Traditionally, plant metabolic engineering has been driven by advances in gene discovery. Metabolite profiling, gene discovery and pathway engineering should go hand in hand for metabolome manipulation to be a success. In our lab, we focus on an all-round approach to make plant metabolic engineering easier.
